I was told, not by my cardiologist but by another doctor of mine, that the depression that often occurs after open heart surgery is being linked to the heart lung machine.... something about the body sensing and recognizing something different about the blood afterwards. I didn't experience any severe type of depression after either of my surgeries, but I was pretty emotional for about a month or two. I also found it hard to concentrate for a while... I like to read and just couldn't seem to finish anything that I started. But, those things cleared up as my recovery progressed.Good luck to you, Paul.
