Wow, Margie, you and your husband are far more fortunate than I was or even most of the people on this board. To have a doctor give you the maze as an option indicates to me that he/she is really a well versed medical professional. I think that you have hit it on the head when you ask whether he wants to live with medicine for the next 50 years. I was quite a bit older than he was but my answer was to cure this thing and get on with life. There are many others on this board who weren't chronic and chose the maze. Eventually, almost everyone does become chronic so just because you aren't chronic now doesn't mean you won't be at some time in the future. Please read some of the stories at the top of the page on individuals who lived with AFib and then had the maze. It will make you feel better, I think. Where do you live and where does the surgeon practice? If he does the maze, I am sure he is probably good. Please keep posting and let us know what you do and when so we can follow your progress. Best of luck to you and your husband.
