Mike, I had AF for 10 years and have been on nearly every bata blocker made. I broke through them and arrive at a point where my doctor said I would need a pacemaker to keep my heart rate up so he could give me more Sotolol to keep my HR down. My quality of life had gone down the drain. I was tired from the medication, couldn't exercise when I was in AF. I had an ablation to correct the Atrial futter but it didn't do anything for the AF. In my research I found out about the Maze procedure and this site. I deceided I did not want a pacemaker and sent my records to Dr. McCarthy and Dr Hammer. I went to CC (2/27/2002) to have the Maze done. They discovered I had 4 clogged arteries. So in the end I had a quadrupple by-pass and the Maze procedure done. Even though I have had some problems during my recovery I am feeling very good. I am on toprol XL50 once a day and a baby aspirin. My resting HR is 66-70. Walking I can get my HR to about 100. Bicycling I can get up to 125. The best of it is "I Feel Good", not drrrug out and always tired.

You will be in good hands with Dr McCathy and Dr Hammer.

Mike, my prayers are with you in your decision. Keep us posted.
