Blood Transfusion during Maze

I see from today's N.Y. Times that two persons have gotten AIDS from blood transfusions.
Does anyone know if blood transfusions are given during the Maze, or does the patient's own blood just get re-circulated?
The medical description of my Maze did not mention anything about a blood transfusion.
