Great story and a wonderful inspiration for both past och future Mazers Ken! Indicidentally - I too experienced the "bursts" you're referring to. And as in your case, they went away once I was fit enough to move around / excercise again. My guess (with emphasis on "guess") is that the phenomenon might be a part of the healing process.
Anyway - great story. Good luck with you're cont'd recovery.

Ps. I'm curios to know: where did you go hiking? I've done some hiking in the Rockies (not far from Boulder, CO) and this summer up in the Alps (in Austria). Great stuff - I'd rather spend all free time on altitude, but the family doesn't quite share my enthusiasm :-)
