Anne, it is pretty much standard to have a fast HR right after the maze. Mine was due to being anemic, and my surgeon put me on a high potency iron pill, and as soon as my blood was built up the heart rate came down.
The exercise is very good for your recovery. Don't over do, especially in lifting anything. Walking is about the best thing most people can do after surgery to regain their strength and condition.
