Dear Rob,

Thank you for following up my inquiry. As to the hemmoraging problem, I have been known to have an occasional sinus squeeze. My Coumidan level would have contributed to some out of control bleeding which could be quite dangerous, especially when you are diving far from competent medical facilities. Since my last post, I have been assigned Amiodarone by my cardiologist as I await an appointment with an EPS. Quite frankly, I was amazed to read about the side effects of this drug!
They included possible liver destruction, blindness, and one that impacts us most as divers: pulmonary dsyfunction. I guess that I am going to politely refuse the use of this drug until I consider other options. My cardiologist held off prescribing this med as long as he could. I have had five AFIB events since February. Each time, the cardioversion did not hold. I plan to contact Dan again and see what they know about diving and the Maze. Could you kindly report your history and identify how you are doing since your Maze procedure? Again, thanks so much to you and all of the other posters for assisting me with my education about the Maze procedure.

Sincerely,

Jim Redmond
