It will be 4 weeks tomorrow since my maze (Dr. McCarthy). I think your question is a good one. I had problems with my small HMO type insurance company. At first they said no to the operation. After much work that decision was overturned and they approved it. Why they approved it I will never really know but I’m forever grateful. My case was one of those that could be considered a “close call”. I am 55 with no health problems except for the afib. I had nothing wrong with my heart except for the afib. The afib was not yet chronic. I knew that the normal progression of this disease would someday cause it to become chronic. It would not just fix itself. I worried about the damage it might do to my heart and my health in the long run. I think the answer to your question is that it is mostly your choice. Dr. Hammer at the CC told me that I was making “a quality of life” decision and that this was a “great operation”. I think that it really boils down to that. I wanted to be able to do the things I love without the fear of afib. Yes, as it turns out it really was my decision. I had many doctors ask me why I was doing this. If they had afib, then they might understand. I’m glad the operation is behind me now and look forward to a life free of afib.
