Paul: I am 7 months post MAZE and have experienced brief episodes of A fib. However, compared to what I had preop., these episodes have been very mild and brief. In fact, they have only lasted about 45 minutes to one hour and have been relieved with one 50mg. dose of Lopressor. I have had about four of these brief episodes. I consider myself lucky to only have to deal with an occasional burst of A fib as compared to weekly episodes of prolonged SVT with heart rates over 200 which I experienced prior to my surgery. My EP advised me that it could take 1 - 2 years before my heart is fully healed. I experienced junctional rhythm for about 1 1/2 months following the surgery. I am told by my EP that my atrium is still not "fully awake," and he has advised exercise to strengthen the heart muscle. I hope this gives you some encouragement to know that others have dealt with a few set backs - however, again I would state that I still would go through the surgery again knowing what my results have been so far. I also had a mitral valve repair. Hang in there, (as I have also been told by knowing and caring people who post on this board)!
