Jerry, I think that you have done your homework on this. I would comment that I know that Dr. McCarthy would tell someone that if they wanted to try an ablation first, that would be fine with him. I had asked him this question and there appeared to be no animosity or "protection of turf". I chose the maze knowing the real stats on ablation success.
I think that Dr. Natale's success might be due to his patient selection process. I think he might screen really well thereby giving him better odds for more success. But, overall, I agree with you, Carl, Jack and Thomas that as much as we might hope for a breakthrough, it's not there yet and the maze is the way to go.
