Jackie,
I experienced several painful episodes in the months immediately after my surgery in January, 2001. I attributed these to muscle strains, and although it hurt a lot, I didn't go see my doctor because it would go away after several days. Back in the summer, I had pain so severe that I finally did see my doctor, who ordered an echo, x-rays and blood work. As it turns out, I had pericarditis, an inflammation of the lining of the heart. It was not caused by a bacterial infection or a viral infection - it was an auto-immune response to the cutting of the pericardium. My doctor put me on a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, and although it took some time, I am now fine again. My doctor told me this syndrome can occur in episodes for up to a year after surgery of this nature. I also had a mitral valve repair, and evidently it happens more frequently to people who have also had this. I was lucky enough that the indocin helped me - however, I've talked with others who have had the same problem who have taken a steriod pack and it cleared their problem up.
Incidentally, for some reason this syndrome hurts worse when eating or swallowing. I don't know why. I guess all those nerves are in the same place?!
Tell Joe to hang in there - I still would have the MAZE to correct the a-fib anyday. No more medicines!
