TC: I'm not sure if I understand your meaning of "rushing it". If you mean rushing as far as expectations of instant NSR, I would say "yes", you must be patient, and let your heart heal. I had some skipped beats, etc., but never gave them any thought since I was feeling so much better. I did NOT have any afib though.
On the other hand, I believe you can't rush doing exercise like walking...a lot! Just do as much as you can, but try to do a measureable amount more each time or two. I found that I had boundless engery in less than 2 weeks, compared to what I had immediately pre-maze. The daily improvement of my exercise capacity really kept me motivated until I developed a really bad post sinus drip from walking hard in the cold air. That led to an uncontrolable cough, which aggrevated my sternum/incision areas.
I would not recommend over exercising if it is going to start you coughing, but your heart will heal faster with as much exercise (walking, stationary bike, etc)as possible.
