Eight week update.
At eight weeks post Maze I have made three attempts to get off the Rythmol and Toprol that I have been on since the surgery. This week I stopped the Toprol. As a result I feel more energetic and active, but it is harder to stay in NSR. Part of the day the pulse is erratic but averages about 80 bpm. Each time I reduce the Rythmol however, I get atrial flutter at a steady 124 bpm within 12 hours. As a result, I have had to resume the 225 mg 3x dosage of Rythmol each time. I look forward to the day when the flutter will no longer occur and I can trash all these meds.

Since my appetite is not very strong these days my neighbor suggested taking Ensure so that the heart will receive the nutrients it needs. This works pretty well.

Exercise consists of walking three miles every afternoon. Sleeping is no problem. The chest feels great and I lift two heavy grocery bags at a time with no trouble. It is marvelous to be able to drive my car again. My kids drove me to the food store while I was in the six weeks 'no driving' period.

Whenever I feel down, I read the posts on this board describing the successful outcomes and that perks me up again.

Good luck, good health and Merry Christmas to everyone.
