Mike: You may have experienced what Thomas & I experienced: an improvement of your atrial flutter (if you had it before). I agree with Tom that Afib is more of a problem, but it was a little less disconcerting when my HR no longer went into the upper 200s when Afib started.
As far as you doctor's feelings that the risks of the maze are too high, I would pin him down as to just what risks he has in mind. From what I have read, ablations, particularily Pulmonary Vein ablations, can have a much higher risk of stroke and certainly stenosis than the maze. The newer (trial) ablation techniques are hopefully going to reduce those risks. The biggest risk with the maze appears to be infection, which is about the only problem I recall being posted by any "mazers" here or elsewhere during the 18 months or so I have been reading about Afib on the web.
Let's hope this is irrelevant to you, and that you convert permanently to NSR.
