Angie:
I had my maze procedure August 13th. The procedure was suggested by two cardiologists out of the five that I eventually saw during my trips in and out of the ER. Interestingly enough, it was only by my own research and self-education about the procedure that convinced me to go through with it. I also received good advice from a surgeon. One of the cardiologists who wanted to keep me on amiodarone for the rest of my life, was an electrophysiologist - go figure! Just from the encounters I have had with cardiologists, they either are for it or against it. It sounds like yours is not interested enough to educate himself about it. The ACC (American College of Cardiology) offers just such opportunities through their continuing education programs. If your cardiologist were self-motivated enough to learn about it (it has been around a while, and I can't imagine that he isn't aware of it), he would take advantage of such programs. I don't mean to discourage you from hoping that he will recommend it, but I'll bet he won't. You will have to take it upon yourself to learn as much as you can about it through web sites such as this and other sources such as logging onto the ACC web sites. Good luck, and I would be glad to e-mail him my own success.
