Dave I am on 50% qualified to answer your question, as I don't play golf, but I play a great game of 8 Ball.
My surgeon told me that the sternum regains all its strength back in 3 months, so you should be ok.
I think I would go easy and hit a bucket of balls to get the idea of how it is going to feel.
