Hi - I am 5 weeks out from my Maze...there have definately been some ups and downs. The first 2 weeks I struggled to get my intestinal track working again..constipation (Henry story was true for me too!) My family had to take me to the emergency room three days after I was discharged because I was sure I was going to die from constipation. But the wonderful ER doctor gave me , what he called "The Green Monster", Citroma (Citrate of Magnesia) - you can buy it at the drug store. It tastes like a bad Mountain Dew - I had it over ice at night and everything worked out find in the morning. The next two weeks, I was stif and sore and terribly depressed. I started crying at 10:00 am and stopped at 2:00 pm. - drove my family crazy - I have nothing to be depressed about - I am cured - Called the doctor and he said this was very typical with open heart patients. Your body has been through a real trama - be kind to your self. It felt silly to be sad when I had just recieved a new lease on life. At the end of the 4th week everything seemed a lot better. I am in the 5th week and I can really feel an improvement. I walk 20 minutes twice a day - but I wanted you to know that I have been on darvocet all this time. My doctor said he wanted me pain free and moving. I couldnot sleep through the night without them. I wake up about 4:00 am and take two more. I sleep well 10 hours a night and it really helps! Maybe you should call your doctor and ask for something stronger - darvocet is a non-asprin and not habit forming. The whole idea is to rest, get your strength back and exercise. Considering all the pills I used to be on when I was in A-Fib - (and I am on NONE now) - if I have to take darvocet for 2 months to get me back on the track - no problem.....remember, be kind to yourself - you have been through alot...and we have a bright new future awaiting when we recover. Take care - Helen
