Marc:
Most of the anti-arrythmic drugs tend to lead to increased AFib over time, and as dosages increase, so do the side effects, and often, the frequency of AFib.
Rythmol is no exception to this paradox.
You mention that your heart is slightly enlarged. Is it
only an atrial enlargement? If so, that is also often caused by AFib, which contributes to the development of a poor ejection fraction (inability to pump well).
I would suggest that correcting the sleep apnea is certainly important, and perhaps there is some interrelation between the 2 conditions.
Have you ever worn an event monitor or a Holter monitor to see when you are in AF. You may be surprised at how often it occurs. I was surprised when I first wore one. I thought I was having a few very isolated incidents. It turned out that it happened dozens of times in 24 hours, but for very short periods. After time and drugs, it became chronic LAF and AFlutter.
Is your sleep apnea related to being overweight? I know I didn't sleep nearly as well during the years I had AF AND gained weight. I found that Breathe-Right strips really helped me sleep and awaken without a dry throat and stuffy head.
Terry is right in suggesting that you find an EP who is familiar with the Maze, or at least open to learning more about it from one of the excellent facilities/surgeons now doing the procedure on a regular basis. The CC would not be a bad place to start, since I am sure they have seen other AFib sufferers who also have sleep apnea.
Good luck, and keep us informed.
