Bill,

The MAZE procedure is not a well know procedure. It is, however, the only successful treatment with a high percentage of curing a-fib. In the case of LAF many cardiologists feel that the risk of open heart surgery for the MAZE is greater than the risk of living with LAF. My surgery was done on 8/21/01 by Dr. Harry Burton at the Owens Heart Center at Mission St. Joseph Hospital in Asheville, NC. In my initial consultation with Dr. Burton his response to my question regarding mortality was that they had never lost a patient having "elective" open heart surgery and that they had never had a MAZE procedure fail to maintain NSR. Dr. Burton has done over 150 MAZE procedures with virtualy all of them in conjunction with a mitral valve repair. I think many of us feel that the risk of repeated ablations is much greater than that of the MAZE.
