Sheena,
I'm a 43 year old female, and I had the Maze surgery at the Cleveland Clinic on January 19, 2001. Except for one afternoon three weeks after the surgery, I have been free of a-fib since that time. I also had my mitral valve repaired at the same time as my maze. I had my surgery on Friday, and I was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday. My twin sister had the maze surgery on the day before me with no mitral valve repair and ended up staying in the hospital a week longer than I did because she accumulated some fluid around her heart which had to be drained. But she is doing great now. The extra stay (at the Cleveland Clinic Guest House) waiting on my sister's discharge was good for me - gave me time to recuperate and get some energy back. A word of advice from a fellow female patient - be sure to ask your doctor for a post-surgical bra or bring your own sports bra (but not a tight one). This helped with the pain and pulling feeling after surgery. Lots of luck. The people at the Cleveland Clinic are the best.
