Sunday 8/19/01 - Checked into Ownes Heart Center, Mission St. Joseph Hospital Asheville, NC. I was
completely lucid.

Monday 8/20/01- Mental prep and blood work for surgery. I was completely lucid.

Tuesday 8/21/01 - 07:30 - 14:30 in OR -Completed valve repair, bypass graft, MAZE performed. Removed
bypass and echo showed valve with unacceptable leak. Back on bypass and valve repaired (not
replaced). No memory of Tuesday.

Wednesday 8/22/01 - Hazy memory of walking from ICU to CCU room. I knew I was OK and that
everything had gone well. In and out of focus all day. Slipped out of NSR in the evening.

Thursday 8/23/01 - Unremarkable day. Rested alot.

Friday 8/24/01 - Unremarkable day. Rested alot.

Saturday 8/25/01 - Feeling pretty fiesty. Ready to head home

Sunday 8/26/01 - Still feeling good. Still weak as a pupply but getting stronger by the hour.

Monday 8/27/01 - Feeling much better and really ready to go home. Surgeon refered me to local
cardiologist that was reluctant to release me in a-fib. It seems they didn't like the rythm drugs my
personal cardiologist had been using.

Tuesday 8/28/01 - Feeling much much better. With Floor staff assistance I was able to get released to
my local cardiologist. Stepping out into the fresh mountain air for the three hour ride to Atlanta was
like heaven. Stepped in the house about 7:30 and melted into my very own Lazy-Boy. I may buy some
Lazy-Boy stock.

Wednesday 8/29/01- Woke up refreshed in my own bed after the best nights sleep I've had in weeks.
Did all of my required walking and breathing exercises. No nap today. Went to bed and fell
asleep on my right side.

Thursday 8/30/01 - Great nights sleep. Visited my cardiologist for echo, blood work and medication plan.
My doc was so exicited about the results that he set up an echo from Feb next to todays's so that they
could run them at the same time and compare the mitral regurgitant jet. They were giggling in the
halls. Follow-up in two weeks. Started meds

Friday 8/31/01 - Woke up feeling great. Felt a little tired as the day progressed. Took short nap.

Saturday 9/1/01 - Another great nights sleep. Around 10 AM checked and found that I was in NSR.

I really am getting stronger every day. I can not say enough positive things about my surgeon,
Dr. Harry Burton, or the Ownes Heart Center at Mission Memorial Hospital in Asheville, NC. Had I
researched the discharge procedures more thoroughly I would have been discharged at least one
day sooner with no hassel.

I agree with Jack. Ask about skin glue and tape. Much much nicer scar than with staples and nothing
to go back to have removed. Since the surgeon rarely closes you may be able to state a preference for
closure method.

About that T-Shirt. Put be down for one. I'll know what it means.

Thanks to all for your support and prayers. They made a tremendous difference.
