I like so many of you have been a runner, biker, and mountain climber for over 20 years. I am now 54 and have no other heart or health problems. Anyway, for the last couple of years my afib has been getting worse until two weeks ago I kicked in and am still in AF. My EP doc just started me on Norpace today and I will get an EKG on Mon. I started Coumidan about two weeks ago. If the afib is still going I will get a TEE and cardioversion on Wed. After that she said that we should do AF ablation. I would rather just go to the maze first, but she says that ablation success has gotten much better. Has anybody every been completely cured and drug free after af ablation? I have never heard of anyone. How safe is the ablation for afib? What questions should I ask? If I have it done, I will be out of work for at least 6 months before I can get my physical back. I would have to wait about that long after a maze to go back to work anyway. Also, I have an HMO and would sure like them to pick up some of the costs of a maze. Would trying the ablation first make any difference with an insurance company?
