Patrick: Back in early February, after I had arranged for a 3 year post-maze follow-up stress EKG to be done and sent to Dr. McCarthy as part of the CC's continued patient follow-up on Maze patients, he wrote a nice note thanking me and congratulating me on my performance on the treadmill.
He told me then of the exciting new position that he was taking at Northwestern, and while it may be a temporary loss to the CC, I don't believe for a minute that he would be involved with anything that would lower his standards of care. His excitement was evident in his note, and I don't think he will settle for anything but the best, and I doubt NW will be "43rd" for long, at least as far as arrhythmia treatment is concerned.
As for the CC, they will do just fine if Dr. Gillinov is still there, as he is probably close to as accomplished as Dr. McCarthy. Now, if McCarthy has recruited Dr. Donald Hammer as one of his attending cardiologists, the CC WILL be losing one first-class doctor. If you find out that Dr. Hammer is at NW, request, NO-INSIST that he be your attending cardiologist. He is the best!
If I had to go back for some heart surgery, I would go to either facility, but I would probably lean to Dr. McCarthy and NW, as he is directly responsible for my present condition, which is:NO afib, NO drugs, wine whenever with no problems, and a feeling that I will never retire as I am enjoying working too much at age 63! A FAR cry from what I was experiencing 43 months ago, when I figured I was better off dead!
