Jack: Two factors that are critical to the Maze surgery success rate are surgeon selection and patient selection. The best Maze surgeons are very discriminating in patient selection.

Dr. McCarthy is one of the most accomplished Maze surgeons. He is outstanding. When you are evaluated for Maze surgery by Dr. McCarthy and his staff, they will tell you if you are are good candidate for the procedure and what the chances of a a successful outcome are. If you are not a good candidate, they will tell you so.

Contrary to what some EPs may tell you, the Maze procedure will not cause you to need a pacemaker. According to Dr. Cox, most Maze patients who have to have a pacemaker post Maze surgery had sick sinus syndrome prior to the surgery. The AF masked the sick sinus syndrome prior to the surgery.

Good luck.
