Patrick: I also corresponded with Byron, and am surprised and saddened to hear of his passing. I also took amiodarone for 18 months, but when the side effects became too debillitating, I opted for the Cox Maze III, by Dr. McCarthy, just over 2 months after I ceased taking it.

I suspect that Byron might have had some more severe problems associated with amiodarone, but since we don't know anything about his surgery (pump time, etc.) or his surgeon's success rate, it is impossible to do more than speculate on what caused his death.

I would not hesitate to do it again for as good as I feel now, and I would select Dr. McCarthy if at all possible.

I was one of the fortunate folks who has had no afib since my discharge from the Cleveland Clinic on 1/25/01. I have had 2 episodes of atrial flutter (at about 2-1/2 months and 19 months) post maze. I was cardioverted both times.

Talk to Dr. McCarthy about your concerns. I am confident that your long ago use of amiodarone will not complicate your surgery.
