Phil: I can understand that you might be "terrified" about your prospects of developing chronic afib and/or the side effects of the drugs (the biggest thing to fear, in MY experienced opinion, as a former chronic afibber).
Give us some more details as to how much afib you have, drugs you have taken and failed, your age, what initiates afib for you, etc.

With the 6000+ posts on this site (see the links to "older" ones at the top of the page), I cannot imagine that you would not feel comforted by the fact that there are dozens of formerly "terrified" folks who have posted of their subsequent cures and new lives. There are a FEW folks who have had post procedure problems for a few months or longer, and even fewer folks, if any, who after having a "touch-up" ablation a few months later, still have afib.

With more info re: your situation, more people can provide more specific comments. In the meantime, follow Rob's advice: focus on being WITHOUT afib, and what that will mean to your lifestyle.
