I had intermitent AF for 15 years before I went chronic for 7 years. I didn't look forward to a heart op, so I waited until there was thickening of the heart wall. At that point you can start to measure heart damage, and the consequences are bigger. Getting mazed gave me my life back, even though I kept a stiff upper lip through it all and did everything I could to stay healthy through af. The maze is pretty much perfected(as much as anything along these lines can be), so don't dwell on the op(if you go ahead with it), dwell on the quality of your life afterwards.
