Sarah,

I am afraid that I don not agree with you about the role of ablations as being primative. Actually, I still think it is an amazing feat for medicine to cure AF with out having to do open heart surgery. A friend of mine, who was found to have four, 80 to 90% blockages, has just had four shunts put in a month ago at Brigham's using this same "primative" technique of catheters. He was out of the hospital the next day and back to work in less than a week. He is feeling wonderful.

The use of segmented or focal point, rather than linear burns was explained to me while I was there. The found that it produces the same results but with less difficulty in maneuvering a loop and therefore, less chance of stenosis.

I am sorry you found the proceedure so disturbing, it gave me hope and made me less fearful. I plan to have mine this summer if Dr. Epstein can fit me into his shedule.

All my best,

Jeanne
