I agree with alot of what you are saying and I do believe that some form of cathetter ablation may eventually replace the maze. However, the fact that that some surgeons are now replacing some of the prescribed Cox maze incisions with cryo or radiofrequency burn lines doesn't change the purpose or intent of the Cox maze. The terms "ablation" and "catheter ablation" are not interchangeable. The beauty of the maze procedure is that the surgeaon doesn't have to "see" the errant electrical signals. The purpose is to create a preset path or "maze" from the SA node to the AV node and block the errant electrical signals. An EP would only be required to "see" the errant electrical signals in a maze followup if they somehow still leak across the healed incisions.
