Glen,
Rate vs Rythm is a classic, old point of dissagrement and argument among cardiologists for years. You can probably put in that term on a search engine, and get tons of articles. I believe your doctor is right about which med is for which problem. When Dr. Schweikert of CC said to me that I need not be overly concerned about the growing list of kinds of arrhythmia's I was being diagnosed with, but that my basic problem was Atrial tachycardia. Tachycardia is a Rate problem, not a rythm problem.
It's sort of like the chicken and the egg. "which came first", and which heart beat "corrupts/decentigrates" into what rythm, or which one "escalates" into another rythm.
His plan about the meds: I think I remember being told that one can't just stop Fleccainide and start another meds cold.
Maybe your going to be a candidate for the Maze. That's NOT a bad thing! Just don't be someone's guinnea pig. At the Afib Summit I attended, they said that a surgeon doesn't "begin" to know what he's doing, until after at least 150 procedures of the SAME kind of operation.
