Most viruses lately send themselves out with return addresses from the infected person's computer. So anyone that has Tom and Bill's email addresses on their computer could be the one infected - and not them.

It could be they are affected, but it could be someone totally different. I had a couple viruses come in to me today, but the MailWasher software that gets rid of SPAM also caught and deleted the viruses.

I'm glad your virus scanner caught the emails.

EVERYONE should have some antivirus software, a firewall and some SPAM blocking software. Driving down the information highway without this software is like speeding on a crowded freeway in a Pinto with bald tires.

The two most common virus programs are Norton and McAffee. I have used both, but prefer the Norton - and have never been infected by a virus. Zone Alarm is a great firewall program and has prevented thousands of computers from hacking into mine. They have a free version that is excellent or a paid version with some more features. As for the SPAM blocker, it has blocked many tens of thousands of emails along with all viruses. It has blocked over 4000 in the last week.
