On request of one of our chiefs a 2.5 year maze update. So,Carl, here I go:
(I am 55 now and I had my maze juni 2001.)
I am still in NSR with occasional extra beats. It's amazing that there is still improvement. One year ago the extra beats were really bothering me and I went to the cardiologist for having a ECG.The computerresult reported a-fib!!! I was shocked. But it was a stupid machine, because the cardiologist told me that there were only a lot of atrial extra beats.Harmless.And no a-fib.And now the extra beats are subsided quite a bit and they are so few that they don't bother me anymore.
Then the noise (cardial souffle),when I lie somewhat on the left side, is still there, but is diminishing too.(MRI heart:normal). The discomforting hearbeatfeeling lying on the left side is diminishing also.
So it is all going very well. The only thing that bothers me still is the slow reaction of the heartbeat on exercise.(the by others mentioned "delay") and the persistent low heartrate while running (average 105/min),so that making speed is impossible.
Last spring I planned to run a half-marathon for the first time after the maze, but I didn't succeed.
I am training again for the coming spring, but it is more hard work than before the maze!
Another thing that I didn't have before the maze is "orthostatic hypotension",that is to say:when I sit and I stand up,it becomes a little dark before the eyes and I have to lean against the wall for a few seconds before I can go on.
Don't get me wrong:I am very satisfied, I work, I feel good, I am in NSR and I am taking no medication at all.
Hans.
