Glenn and all others interested. I wrote Dr. Adam E. Saltman of the UMass Memorial Medical Center last night about his surgery on Beating hearts. Here is his reply that I received today. Also a link to his person sheet.
http://www.ctsnet.org/home/asaltmanHi, Jack -
I remember you well, and I hope you are doing the same.
Yes, I routinely do the maze on a beating heart, sometimes in combination with other heart surgery and sometimes alone. I have also been doing COMPLETELY ENDOSCOPIC maze operations, without opening the chest at all, for about a year now. Thirteen US patients and four UK patients so far by me, and about 16 patients elsewhere, all using my technique. This is very very exciting and is a true breakthrough for AF patients, as they can leave the hospital in about a day and have only 6 small holes (5mm) in their chest...
If you would like to see more about this, please check out my presentation and the microwave section on the Heart Surgery Forum at:
http://www.hsforum.com/vol6/issue3/2003-11333.html and http://www.hsforum.com/microwave.I also have a video of the procedure, which I thought was uploaded to HSF, but I can't find it (!). I can send you one if you like...
Take care!
Adam Saltman
