I had mitral valve prolapse for years, along with plenty of premature contractions, some atrial and some ventricular. For me, the PVC's were the stronger of the two. Premature atrial contractions were not as bothersome. Eventually, I started having runs of a-fib on occasion, and then progressed to an almost daily basis before I had the maze surgery in January, 2001. I think the mitral valve problem caused some of the premature beats, but I'm not sure if the problem caused the a-fib because my twin sister also had a-fib and had the maze at the same time as me. She did not have problems with her mitral valve, and our heart problems were similar.
