Frank!
I had my Maze back in February -99 after having suffered sporadic Afib attacks since the mid 90's. Late -97 the Afibs came increasingly frequently until I finally went into a chronic Afib around -98. The professionals told me that this is a pretty typically pattern for Afib with a lot of patients. For me, personally, the chronic Afib was almost a notch less worse than the constant fear for the next onset of Afib. However, having said that, I'm not sure that I would have lasted long in chronic Afib - mentally and physically. The thing that kept me going was the promise of a Maze operation and the likely chance that I would do better. I don't regret having gone through with the operationen. In fact, again - for me personally, even though the operation involves relatively low risk, a higer risk percentage would probably not have stopped me! I agree with Anne - to my knowledge, the chance of a favourable outcome is not lessened after having suffered from chronic Afib over a period of time. My guess, though, is that the come back might take a little longer time, given the time that the heart has been unaccustomed to a regular heart beat? Anyway - whether suffering from paroxysmal or chronic Afib, you can benefit from the Maze. I wish you the very best in your cont'd search for a solution to your problems.
