Thank you everyone who gave me some insight as to why my father is still on coumadin almost 6 months after he was cardioverted back into NSR. He went back into afib after the mitral valve repair/maze and has only stayed in NSR since the last cardioversion almost 6 months ago. That was 5 weeks after the surgery.
I suppose his doctor is being conservative and is afraid he will go back into afib, but he is only 60 and I hate to see him still on coumadin. It seems most people are off after an average of 4 months. I think most of these people remained in sinus rythym after the surgery.
How long should one remain in NSR before it is safe to say he/she won't go back into afib?
If I lived in the same city I would go to the appointment and bug his doctor with my questions...
