I haven't posted in a while either, but I do keep up with the posts. It was great reading about Tim and his new life post-maze. Unlike you Tim, I almost never take my pulse. I did constantly before the maze. I never want to have a-fib again. Like some of the others, my heart rate is still somewhat elevated 2&1/2 years post maze. I notice it particularly when I exercise - my cardiologist says it's due to nerve damage from the surgery. He says sometimes these nerves recover fully - sometimes partially - sometimes not at all.
The reason I'm posting today is because I just found out at lunch today that an acquaintance of mine had a stroke while on vacation in Texas with his wife. He's on life support, and as soon as his two sons get to Texas, he will be taken off. There is no hope. This is on the heels of another acquaintance that had a stroke two weeks ago and is now in rehabilitation.
The man that had the stroke two weeks ago was not aware of any problems with his heart, but evidently had atrial fib which the Doctors figure caused his stroke. He's healthy otherwise - probably 50 years old.
The man that I heard about today has had atrial fib. for about 5 years. I've talked to him several times about the maze, and how it's helped me. But his local cardiologist discouraged him from seeking out this cure. Instead, kept him on debilitating medicines to try to keep the problem under control. Now he's at death's door from a stroke which was probably caused by the a-fib. It really makes me angry! If his cardiologist had been supportive and helped him investigate all his options, he might not be in the shape he's in today.
I'm just thankful that I found this site, my local Dr. was so great to help me, and I ended up at the CC where Dr. McCarthy and the rest of the staff cured me of atrial fib.
