I had the maze via the right thoracotomy ("minimally invasive") approach Jan. 7, 1999 at age 52, done at Georgetown by Dr. Cox shortly before he semi-retired. I had been in and out of AF, on drugs, failed amiodarone and felt generally crummy. I was in AF at least 50% of the time just prior to operation. I am in sinus and have been with one exception, an episode of atrial flutter that wouldn't break spontaneously. I got cardioverted electrically. It happened about 9 months ago. I don't see it as a failure, just a minor incident compared to my situation prior to maze. No recurrence, no drugs. My exercise capacity is better than it has been in at least 6 years.
