From what few Maze surgeons that I have corresponded with, they accept patients by self referrals, or referrals from the cardiologist. One of them told me that it comes down to a business, and some cardiologist don't want their patients to have the maze as they will no longer need the cardiologist, and the surgeon's profession is doing the surgery. My cardiologist cut me loose and told that I didn't need to come back after 2 trips to see him after the surgery. I was lucky to have a cardiologist that recommended the Maze to me, or I would probably still be fighting the AF.
I think it really is up to the patient, as it should be, as to how much the AF has affected their way of life, and how much they are willing to put up with before having one major surgery that is around 95% a cure for AF. I do not try to persuade anyone to have the maze, but in some cases I would probably try to discourage it. I just want everyone to be as informed as possible before making the decision, and if I can be of any more help let me know.
Best wishes and my prayers.
