A warning about email viruses

I just bounced back an email with the KLEZ virus in it. It came to the email address I use only on this newsgroup. That basically means somebody that has visited the board has the virus on their computer - probably unknowingly.

My Norton Antivirus picks those up quick. McAffee and others are good also - BUT PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU GET SOME ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE ONTO YOUR COMPUTER.

Some precautions

1 - Have Antivirus software on your computer

2 - Do NOT open any attachments unless you are absolutely sure what it is. Just because it comes from a friend doesn't mean they haven't picked up a virus. The latest viruses will even send emails appearing to be from a friend or even with your friend's return email address. One version of the KLEZ virus even titles itself as a "KLEZ removal tool".

3 - Consider an online email tool or account. There are email accounts that prescan for viruses and you read over the internet. Many are free. There are also tools like the one I mentioned earlier called "Mail Washer" that read the header, subject line, and first few lines of an email. You can delete without ever having to download an infected file, attachment or script onto your computer.

That can be a good protection for future viruses. Some actually lock up my email account or computer as I try to download them. This way I can delete them from the mail server and never have to try to download them.

I love the filter aspects too. It's a great spam tool. There are filters you can set up and filters of known spammers and spam servers.
