I may be wrong, but my understanding is that most a fib involves pathways that involve, even if they are not limited to, the left atrium. Atrial flutter, on the other hand ususally arises in the right, atrium. In fact, the physical electrical pathway for most episode of flutter (termed usual atrial flutter) involves a path that traverses a specific area within the RA. This is why focal ablation is so much easier and so much more successful than the older ablation methods for atrial fibrillation.
