Gene, I can't tell you much about blood thinners from my personal experiences. I was only on coumadin for 3 months after a possible blood clot after surgery. During my AF life I only took aspirin.

When on coumadin, you have to get your blood tested, (frequently to get established, then probably every 2 to 4 weeks after), on a regular basis to control your INR.

If you get the mechanical valve, that will require coumadin or maybe some new type blood thinner in place of coumadin the rest of your life. This is a big issue to take into consideration in making your choices.

There is a new thinner, Low-molecular-weight heparins, enoxaparin sodium (Lovenox), and dalteparin sodium (Fragmin), but I do not know if these can be used in place of coumadin for mechanical valves.
