I live in Western NY, and under went the Maze procedure on 3/1/01. The surgery was performed early in the morning, and all went well. I was in the hospital for about 10 days, and was discharged with a violent cough. The day after I was discharged, I coughed so hard I broke a wire holding my sternum together. After rushing to the hospital that day to have it checked out, I was told that everything appeared ok, and was given some cough syrup. A week later I was again rushed to the hospital, with the sternum appearing infected. The docs admitted me, and perform x-rays & ct scans. Not only was there an infection, but the blood thinner (coumadin) was working too well, and I was bleeding internally. They discovered fluid around my heart, and finally determined that the wire had indeed broke. They opened me up a second time. Drained the fluid from around the heart and re-wired the sternum on 3/17/01. I was in the hospital for a week, but since then have had only one episode of Afib. Currently I'm in cardiac rehab, and plan to go back to work on 5/21/01. If anyone is interested in more details of my experience, please let me know.
