Frank, there shouldn't be any difference in the outcome of the maze, regardless which type of AF you have.
The object of the maze is to make it impossible for the fibrillation to start, or sustain itself. The following is a explanation which is better than mine.

Maze Procedure: This surgery, also called the Cox-Maze procedure, is considered the gold standard for treating AF. As its name suggests, during this procedure the surgeon makes a series of incisions in the left and right atria, creating pathways within the heart so that the electrical impulse has only one route to travel. This causes the malfunctioning electrical system of the heart to move in the correct sequence.
