Carl,
I was lucky in that both my primary care physician Dr. Peter Berman and my cardiologist Dr. William Stevenson of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and head of the cardiology department at Harvard Medical School supported my decision to try the maze.
Dr. Stevenson first raised the idea of the maze to me about 3years ago but at that time he said the figures were 80 per cent success rate. I decided to wait. When I talked to Dr Stevenson again this year after reading the success stories on this board he said that figures now showed a success rate of over 90 per cent. With that I decided to go ahead with the maze. Dr. Stevenson suggested that I have the maze done at CC or Mayo where they have a lot experience with the maze procedure. There are couple of surgeons in Boston who have done th e maze but only with people having mitral valve replacement. Since I had chronic lone af he felt that going to people who had more experience with maze for lone af would make a lot of sense. I chose Dr. McCarthy at CC and have been very pleased with the results.
