Spoke again with John who is impatient to get home and get some rest! He reports that he is NOT being a good patient ... well, not always.
Since various variations on normal heart behavior are the norm after this kind of operation (from what I understand), it would seem that his is behaving itself sufficiently to have him looking homeward - perhaps as early as tomorrow?
I'll check with him on Wed and let you know if he has used his "get out of jail free" card.
Once home, he anticipates being able to crank up the laptop and communicate some.
