I experienced post-MAZE pericarditis which was very painful. It was due to the inflammation from surgery - not from an infection. It started approximately 2 months post-maze, but wasn't properly diagnosed until several months later. I was put on an anti-inflamatory drug which fixed my problem over a period of weeks. My sister had fluid to accumulated around her heart and somewhat around her lungs after surgery. If I understood the Doctors at the CC, this is somewhat common with open-heart surgery and will gradually disappear with time. Steroids may help with any inflammation. My sister had to have the fluid around her heart removed - but she's doing great now!! It's been 15 months since our surgeries. Hope this helps.
