Carl Plaskett e-mailed me to inquire how I was doing on my Rythmol dosage reduction after my maze. Dr. Millar (my Maze surgeon in SLC) recommended 300 mg Rythmol x twice a day for 6 weeks post Maze; then cut the dose in half for 2 weeks; and then quit at 8 weeks. At 6 weeks post Maze, I had had 6 episodes (30 minutes to 6 hours) of what I call "nervous murmur" heartbeats since leaving LDS hospital, which on a Holter Monitor test were diagnosed as PACs and PVCs (No Afib!). The episodes distracted me enough, and because my wife and I were going to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico last week for 4 days, I decided to stay with the 600 mg dosage until I returned to the U.S. Didn't have any irregular heart action at all in Mexico (and I even indulged in some "adult beverages", which I have not done since my surgery). Anyway, after returning home, and having no arrhythmias of any kind for a week, including the 4 days in Mexico, I cut back to half dosage on the Rythmol a couple days ago. Woke up this morning to a 30 minute episode of PVCs, so I think I'll stick with the 600 mg dose now until I see my cardiologist here in San Diego Tuesday right after Memorial Day, and discuss the situtation with him. I am now 7 weeks and 2 days post Maze, and very happy to be Afib free. Hope in time I will be Rythmol free also. Perhaps the real solution to the PACs/PVCs is to stay in Mexico on margaritas!
Don
