I had the Maze surgery at the Mayo Clinic on 12/03/01 by Dr. Dearani. My surgery was successful (no more AFib) and my experience at Mayo was very positive. I would be happy to share my experiences with you (via phone or email) and give you the names of some of the staff that I met on the hospital floor. Some of the PAs (Physician Assistants) were fantastic.
Like your husband I am otherwise extremely healthy and active. The AFib was really starting to mess up my life. But things are back to normal because the surgery really did work. I laid down on the operating table in AFib and I have not noticed a skipped or irregular heart beat since I woke up in the recovery room.
By the way I am originally from the North Shore of Lake Superior myself.
