Very interesting posting,Paul! I was always a swimmer and waterpolo player,I have played in the national team >so I had severe training from my youth and at the age of 40 I started long distance running. From the age of 38 I had very seldom a short period of atrial fibrillation, but from age 42 it became worse and from that time I needed medication.I had my maze in june 2001 at 53 years of age.So the severe training might be an explanation for having had the afib.On the other hand:my mother is treated with atrial flutter, which started when she was 65 years of age.So it must be in the family too!
Another for me very interesting problem you mentioned is the atrial transport.Already two times my cardiologist made a (transthoracic) echo (last time 9 months post op) and told me that there is no atrial transport of the left atrium. The right atrium is okay.Because of that he first adviced me to stay on the coumadin, but after some discussion and with help from the board I am on the asperin now.In 6 months we try another echo, but my cardiologist claims that in 50% after the maze procedure the atrial transport will not return and in that case I should continue the asperin for life.Far a lesser problem than having coumadin for life, but still..
Concerning the recovery of the heart:I have started running again and the biggest problem I run (!) into is the maximum heartrate. It is still lower than before the maze, but on the other hand it is still improving. In the beginning it was difficult to get above the 100/min and now I am on 140/min.
Best wishes,Hans Koster
